The Malta Maritime Authority is investigating a security distress signal sent by the Malta-registered vessel San Carlo which was reportedly attacked by pirates about 160km off the coast of the Somali capital Mogadishu on Wednesday, the authority said yesterday.
The San Carlo (17672gt) - a tanker manned by a crew of 25 and carrying a cargo of gas oil - was sailing from Bahrain on its way to South Africa.
MMA officials are working in close collaboration with the authorities of the nearby African states and the Commercial Crime Services, a specialised division of the International Chamber of Commerce set up to combat international crime. The CCS works in close collaboration with the International Maritime Organisation, Interpol and various national governments.
The authority also referred to international news reports about a pirate attack on the vessel Pagania. It said that there is no such vessel registered under the Maltese flag.
