FILM
Island of Oblivion
Spazju Kreattiv is showing Jamie Vella’s film Island of Oblivion on July 14 at 7.30pm.
In the film, Odysseus and Calypso live a life of pastoral island bliss, but tranquillity gives way to turbulence when Odysseus discovers the apparent truth about his identity. He has a choice: confront his past or remain sheltered in comfort.
The screening, certified PG, will be followed by a Q&A session with the director.
Tickets from spazjukreattiv.org.
Taxi Driver (50th anniversary)
Martin Scorsese’s classic film Taxi Driver, starring Robert De Niro, has been restored in 4K for its 50th anniversary.
The film, which will be shown at Spazju Kreattiv on July 17 at 7.30pm, follows isolated ex-marine Travis Bickle, who applies for a job as a taxi driver, hoping that the nocturnal working pattern will alleviate the effects of his insomnia and distract him from his gnawing depression.
But ferrying passengers through the seedy underbelly of nighttime New York City only compounds Bickle’s psychological dislocation from the world around him. His night shifts in the cab are spent resenting those he sees, while his waking daytime hours are wasted away in the gloom of adult movie theatres.
After entering into a troubled relationship with a political campaigner and embarking on a fraught mission to save a teenager from the world of prostitution, Bickle’s sense of place and purpose steadily warps. He withdraws into himself, hoards illegal firearms and begins a regimen of intense physical training in preparation for a misguided vigilante assault on the evils of society.
The film is suitable for an audience aged over 18. Tickets from spazjukreattiv.org.
