THEATRE

Boċċi: The Musical

Boċċi: The Musical returns for a new round of performances in a larger theatrical setting at Montekristo Estate, Siġġiewi, on June 18, 19 at 8pm and June 20 and 21 at 3 and 8pm. 

Set against the backdrop of a struggling boċċi club on the brink of closure, the show follows an eccentric group of characters comes together in a last-ditch effort to save it. 

Produced by Teatru Malta and Give or Take Productions, the musical is co-directed by Malcolm Galea and Philip Leone-Ganado.

MalTease

Inspired by Valletta’s legendary entertainment hotspot, Strada Stretta, MalTease captures the spirit of Valletta’s historic thoroughfare at Spazju Kreattiv, on June 19 and 20 at 8pm and on June 21 at 7pm.

Under the direction of Undine LaVerve, the show showcases the breathtaking diversity and versatility of burlesque as an art form. 

The 90-minute performance is classified 18+.

MUSIC

Scorpions live in concert

Legendary rockers Scorpions are performing at the MFFC in Ta’ Qali on Tuesday, as the German outfit celebrates five decades of iconic hits.

A Midsummer Dream

The Cordia String Quartet, tenor Cliff Zammit Stevens and actor Clare Agius are performing in A Midsummer Dream at the Aula Capiturale, St Paul’s Cathedral, Mdina, on Wednesday, at 7.30pm.

Under the musical direction of Jacob Portelli, the programme will feature music by Handel, Brahms, Haydn and Dvořák.

TS Rock Series: Beangrowers

The Beangrowers, pioneers of Malta’s alternative rock movement, will take the Salesian Theatre stage in Sliema on June 20 at 7pm as part of the TS Rock Series. Local band Mauve is the supporting act.

Fête de la Musique

The Salesian Theatre in Sliema is hosting the official Fête de la Musique celebrations in Malta on June 21, in collaboration with the French Embassy and the Alliance Française de Malte-Méditerranée.

The event will feature music acts Sweet & Sour, Maracujazz and Caña Soul. Entrance is free. Doors open at 6.30pm, with performances starting at 7pm.

Voci d’estate

On the occasion of the Fête de la Musique, the Italian Cultural Institute of Valletta, with the support of the Embassy of Italy in Malta, is presenting an evening entirely dedicated to Venetian baroque music at St Paul’s Pro-Cathedral, Valletta, on June 21 at 7.30pm.

Taking part will be the Corsivo Singers and the Ensemble Isouard, together with the Ensemble Vocale MelChoir from Breda di Piave, who will perform works by Antonio Vivaldi and Alessandro Marcello.

The event is free but donations for the church are welcome.


ARTS

Malta International Arts Festival

The Malta International Arts Festival runs until June 21 with a diverse programme of theatre, dance, classical and contemporary music, and visual arts, unfolding across various heritage sites in Valletta and Floriana, and beyond.

Among other highlights, audiences this week can enjoy an intimate 20-minute recital by flutist Laura Cioffi inside a 16th-century underground water cistern in Valletta on Monday and Tuesday. The entrance is in front of the Courts of Justice, Republic Street, Valletta.

MIAF is also presenting two different programmes for Young Creatives in Motion, featuring four different dance schools in each programme at the Manoel Theatre on June 15 and 16.

Greek artist Myrgon will perform underground in Valletta on June 17 and 18 and at the Valletta Campus Theatre together with the string quartet Black Angels and ŻfinMalta on June 19.

The seventh edition of M.A.D. (Music and Dance), featuring choreographies by Alessio Damiani from Italy and Jade Farrugia, will take place at the Valletta Campus Theatre on June 17 and 18.

The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra will present a programme for string orchestra, featuring works by Stravinsky, Bartók, Schnittke and Garzia at the Manoel Theatre, Valletta, on June 20.

Victoria International Arts Festival

The festival continues on June 17 with the BrassTubes Ensemble performing at the Bishop’s Curia courtyard in Victoria. 

The following day, on June 18, the Royal Conservatoire Brass of Scotland will perform at II-Ħagar Museum’s rooftop, while Stefan Calleja and Stephanie Quintano will perform in a violin and piano recital at the Aula Mgr G. Farrugia on June 19. The latter venue will host the Trio Nora (violin, viola and cello) on June 20. All the concerts are being held at 8pm.

On June 21, the exhibition Ġużeppi Briffa: Reluctant Modernist, a retrospective of works by the artist, curated by Christian Attard, will be launched at Il-Ħagar Museum at 11.45am. 

Entrance to all events is free.


FILM

Marcello Mio

The Alliance Française de Malte-Méditerranée is hosting the screening of Marcello Mio at the Embassy Cinemas in Valletta on Monday at 6.30pm.

The comedy, by director Christophe Honoré, serves as a meta-fictional tribute to the legendary Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni. 

Mastroianni’s real-life daughter, Chiara, plays a version of herself as she decides to dress, speak and act entirely like her late father, causing her friends and family (many of whom play themselves, including Catherine Deneuve) to start calling her ‘Marcello’.

The film, which was selected to compete at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, will be shown in French with English subtitles.

Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition

Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta is screening a feature-length documentary charting the heavy metal band’s remarkable five-decade journey on June 20 at 7.30pm.

Alongside the band, the documentary features on-camera reflections from prominent admirers including Javier Bardem, Lars Ulrich and Chuck D, each speaking to Iron Maiden’s influence on music, culture and generations of fans worldwide.

The film, classified 15, is also being screened on June 28 at 5pm.

MISCELLANEOUS

Sunset Tour

Heritage Malta is organising a sunset heritage trail at Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra archaeological park on June 19 at 6.15pm.

The event will include a visit to the two sites, as well as the surrounding Mediterranean garigue landscape with its many historical features including the Misqa Tanks, the Congreve Memorial and the nearby Ħamrija Tower. There will be tours in Maltese and English.

Curators will be available on site to discuss the archaeological remains and highlight the natural features surrounding the temples. 

At the end of the tour, light refreshments will be served at the Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra visitor centre.

Il-Bandu tal-Imnarja

The Agrarian Society of Malta is presenting Il-Bandu tal-Imnarja, a historically grounded re-enactment of the traditional proclamation ceremony associated with the Mnarja festivities.

The programme begins with mass at St Paul’s Cathedral in Mdina on June 20 at 6pm, during which the traditional palji will be formally blessed. This will be followed by a ceremonial defilé through the streets of Mdina and Rabat, recalling the original function of the Bandu as a public announcement of the Mnarja celebrations and equine races at Saqqajja.

Participants in traditional attire, accompanied by ceremonial elements and historic symbolism, will take part.

The bastions surrounding Mdina’s Main Gate will be illuminated with traditional fjakkoli, enhancing the atmosphere and religious meaning of Mnarja (Luminaria). 

The event is free of charge.

Wirja Argrarja, Nadur

The 2026 edition of the Wirja Agrarja in Nadur is being held on June 20 and 21. 

Held over two days, the event offers visitors the chance to explore agricultural products, antique machinery, honey tasting and traditional bread-making. Attendees can also enjoy folk art exhibitions, live blacksmithing and various cultural shows, including ones featuring horses and sheep, alongside diverse collections and local crafts. 

The free activity, organised by the Nadur local council, is being held in Nadur square on June 20 from 8 to 11.30pm and on June 21 from 8am onwards.
