A head teacher from southeast London who stole £500,000 from her school has been jailed for five years, the BBC reported yesterday.

Newspaper reports had claimed that Colleen McCabe had used the money to fund a lavish lifestyle by going on holiday, including holidays in Gozo.

She spent £7,000 on footwear alone as well as huge amounts on furniture, electrical goods, designer clothes, jewellery, nights out and gifts.

Ms McCabe, 51, was sentenced at Southward Crown Court yesterday after being convicted of 11 sample counts of theft and six of deception.

She was caught when the grant-maintained school returned to the control of the London Borough of Bromley and the council auditors were sent in.
