Malta's quest to retain the European team championship title, won last year in Latvia, took off in style yesterday at the Dolmen Resort Hotel as Alex Borg, Simon Zammit and Joe Grech beat Belgium's top team 10-8.

The Group C match looked like drifting the Belgians' way after the first 12 frames and the opening two sessions were played. Belgium led 7-5 at that juncture but Malta 1 hit back with a strong finish to win the remaining session 5-1 for an overall 10-8 victory.

Borg was unbeaten but drew 1-1 three times with Jim Spapen, Kevin van Hove and Peter Bullen. Zammit lost his first match to van Hove 0-2 but then pulled himself together to beat Bullen and Spapen 2-0. Grech drew 1-1 with Bullen, lost 0-2 to Spapen and then beat van Hove 2-0 in the last session.

In the other Group C match, the Netherlands beat France 16-2. Today, Malta face France in a match starting at 9 a.m.

In yesterday's morning session, Malta 3, composed of C. Castaldi, M. Bugeja and D. Cortis, were beaten by Scotland 14-4.
