Malta International Airport among Europe’s top airports for eighth year
Cleanliness and security screening singled out as passenger satisfaction score tops European average
Malta International Airport has been ranked among Europe’s top airports for the eighth consecutive year, with a special nod for its sanitation standards and security screening process.
Airports Council International announced on Tuesday that Malta’s terminal was recognised in the category for airports that handle between five to 15 million passengers.
The rankings are based on the feedback collected throughout 2025 from departing passengers at 383 airports worldwide participating in the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) survey programme across different categories. About a third of the participating airports were in Europe.
Malta International Airport outperformed the European average across all 31 satisfaction indicators covering each aspect of the airport journey, from the quality of the signage inside the terminal to the helpfulness of the frontline staff.
The airport scored an overall satisfaction mark of 4.41 on a five-point scale and placing the airport above the European average of 4.12.
The airport’s security screening process earned it a top score of 4.60, ranking as the second most important contributor to the airport experience by surveyed passengers.
MIA noted how passenger satisfaction at security has risen markedly compared to 2024, reflecting the airport’s recent investment in state-of-the-art scanners and the resulting improvements at this stage of the journey.
The new baggage scanners, which were introduced at the end of 2024, feature technology which provides airport security staff with 3D images and more detailed information than previous models, which means that passengers no longer need to separate liquids and electronics from the rest of their baggage.
Malta International Airport also secured the Cleanliness Award for the first time, following increased passenger satisfaction with sanitation standards across the terminal, particularly its washroom facilities.
The airport maintained consistently high scores throughout the year, even during the peak season, when around 35,400 passengers used the terminal facilities every day.
Malta International Airport achieved a final cleanliness score of 4.39, surpassing the European average of 4.05.
Last month Malta International Airport announced it will be adding 32 check-in desks, five departure gates and expand its baggage facilities as part of a major expansion project which is expected to be completed by 2028.
