An Australian expat says she has chosen to leave Malta and return to her country in frustration over the overwhelming number of unchecked illegalities on the island. 

"I've had enough of this country. I've had enough of the noise, the constant illegalities, the lack of law enforcement, the vandalism, the overcharing for foreigners... I'm selling up. I'm sorry to say but Malta is a third-world country," Michelle Sullivan told Times of Malta. 

The frustration was cemented over the past three days after a garage in Triq il-Ħemel, Swieqi continued being demolished with a jackhammer in breach of the summer construction regulations, she claimed. 

Ms Sullivan said phonecalls to the authorities to report the illegalities for three days drew a blank. She filmed the two workmen this morning as they continued demolishing the building. 

She described Swieqi as a war-zone where there is no rule of law, saying that dozens of cars are seen driving up one-way streets with no law enforcement officers ever to be seen. 

"People keep telling me to go back to my country. And that's what I've decided to do after seven years. I know many other foreigners who feel the same way. Sadly, in Malta it's all about money and corruption."
