Malta Under-21 will be looking to make amends for the 4-1 defeat to Czech Republic when they play Montenegro in another UEFA Championship qualifier, at the Gradski Stadium, in Podgorica today.
For Silvio Vella’s team this will be their fourth successive away match in Group One.
So far the team’s record on their travels was encouraging, picking up four points from three matches with their only upset coming last week when they were overwhelmed by group favourites Czech Republic who play their second match today at Latvia.
At present, the Maltese team are sharing second place in the six-team group along with Moldova as Belgium top the standings with full points from two matches following their 2-0 win away against Latvia in their last outing.
Matthew Guillaumier has been added to the Maltese squad and the St Andrew’s midfielder could earn a starting berth today as Vella will be seeking to add more support to the team’s main striker Luke Montebello, scorer of the only goal against the Czechs in Jablonec.
So far, Montenegro have played two group qualifiers, both against Moldova.
They won the home tie 1-0 but last week they were beaten by Moldova in Orhei with the same scoreline.
