The Royal Marines Cadets Drill Team of the Malta GC Unit of the Sea Cadet Corps have returned from the United Kingdom as winners of the Eastern Area Sea Cadets RMC 6 + 1 armed drill competition.
The drill team travelled to the UK under the command of Malta Unit Commanding Officer, Lt. (SCC) D Montebello RMR and 2nd. Lieutenant (SCC) R Cavlan RMR.
The competition was held at the Newark Show grounds in Nottinghamshire. The show grounds are the venue for the annual Eastern Area Drill and piping competition which includes competitions between Eastern Area Units in Royal Marines Cadets armed and un-armed drill and Sea Cadets drill, piping and colour party ceremonial. The Malta drill team was competing against another 11 teams.
The Maltese Marine Cadets trained for more than three months under the guidance and supervision of 2nd Lt. Rene' Aquilina AFM, who is a long time staff member of the Malta Unit, and A/Sgt. Matthew Camilleri.
Lt. Aquilina is a serving Officer in the Armed Forces of Malta whilst Sgt. Camilleri is a former member of the 2nd. Battalion of the Royal Anglian Regiment and he served in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Germany before retiring from the service.
The competition comprised a 12-minute static and moving drill display by six marine cadets and their guard commander.
The Maltese cadets won the competition and Lance Corporal Jean Paul Buhagiar was awarded the trophy for best Guard Commander.
