The Presidency conclusions of the Brussels European Council held on March 22 and 23 tasked the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) with monitoring the implementation of the Lisbon Strategy on an ongoing basis.

The EESC Bureau followed by the plenary meeting therefore authorised the establishment of a 30-member sub-committee with a remit to draw up an opinion on the progress made on the implementation of the Lisbon Strategy, on the basis of co-operation with national economic and social councils.

The EESC has set up, with member states' ESCs and other partner organisations, an interactive network of civil society initiatives aimed at promoting the implementation of the strategy.

Finally the sub-committee will organise a conference at which the opinions and co-operation situation are presented to a wider public.

The sub-committee will have a representative from each member state (25 in all). Malta will be represented by Anna Maria Darmanin, UHM, group II representative. The first progress report is targeted for February 2006.
