Malta’s first stamp, the Queen Victoria Halfpenny first used on December 1, 1860, has been reproduced to mark its 150th anniversary.
The stamp is featured on a miniature sheet alongside an image of an addressed envelope with the first recorded use of the stamp.
The miniature sheet, which includes one €2.80 stamp, goes on sale today at all Maltapost branches along with a limited edition commemorative folder carrying a letter signed by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi to mark the anniversary as well as a reproduction of the Halfpenny stamp.
A total of 20,000 miniature sheets with a face value of €2.80 will be issued. The sheet was designed by Joseph Said while the stamps have been printed on Maltese Crosses watermarked paper.
Maltapost also announced that a new sub-post office has begun operating from Emtes Stationery, William Baker Street in Gudja.
