Mgr Liberio Andreatta, president of the Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi, is in Malta to make the preliminary arrangements for a congress of 1,000 to 1,500 priests from around the world to be held in Malta later on this year.
The congress, which is held annually in different countries, will be gathering the priests in Malta to study, discuss and pray.
Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech said the congress fitted in one of the niches the government was building for the tourism sector - religious tourism.
This sector incorporated meetings and congresses for the clergy, visits to Malta by tourists who would come to enjoy Malta's religious and cultural heritage, as well as foreigners who would come to enjoy the feasts.
The congress in Malta will be led by Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyol of Colombia.
