Malta has been drawn to sing fifth at the 48th Eurovision Song Contest.

The running order of the 26 countries taking part was announced yesterday at a draw which took place in the studios of LTV, the Latvian host broadcaster for the event.

The contest will be opened by Iceland, in the so-called bad luck position, and end with the song by Slovenia.

Maltasong chairman Charlò Bonnici said that singing in fifth place was not such a good position, but at the end of the day it was the song and the singer that mattered.

The winner of last year's contest, Marie N, will be co-hosting the show, to be held in Riga, with Renard Kaupers.

Malta's representative for this year's Eurovision, which will be held in Riga on May 24, will be chosen during the Malta Song for Europe Festival in February.

It was announced yesterday that one of the 50 finalists for this festival has withdrawn from the competition. The withdrawn song is So Far Away, and it has been replaced by the 51st song, Welcome.
