Malta tops EU ranking for AI use at work
The country is also ranked as the highest among EU member states for overall AI usage
Malta has the highest rate of generative artificial intelligence (AI) use in the workplace among EU countries, according to Eurostat data.
Almost 30 per cent of workers in Malta use AI tools in their jobs, placing the country ahead of Denmark (27.2 per cent) and the Netherlands (26.6 per cent).
Generative AI tools, such as ChatGPT, allow users to create content including text, images and videos based on written prompts.
According to the data, across the EU, one in three people used AI tools in 2025, although most did so for personal rather than professional purposes.
Countries with the lowest levels of workplace AI use include Italy (eight per cent), Romania (5.2 per cent) and Hungary (1.3 per cent).
Malta ranked third highest (46.5 per cent) among EU member states for overall AI usage, falling behind Denmark (48 per cent) and Estonia (47 per cent).
AI tools are increasingly becoming part of daily routines, particularly among students and professionals. Statistics published earlier this year revealed that around two-thirds of a sample of Maltese children already use AI tools, highlighting the rapid normalisation of generative AI among users aged 9 to 16 years.
At the University of Malta, academics had previously said they were relying more on oral examinations as students turned to AI to complete assignments.
In the last budget, the government announced plans to offer free AI training courses to all citizens, and anyone who completes the training will be eligible for a free subscription to an AI tool.
The statistics also show that more than two-thirds of individuals said they did not use AI generative tools last year. Of these, 39 per cent said they did not need such tools, while eight per cent did not know how to use them and five per cent were unaware such tools existed.
According to Dylan Seychell, lecturer at the Department of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Malta, the use of AI at the workplace could rapidly increase productivity, improve efficiency and provide more commercially competitive advantages.
