Malta-based dating website ordered to settle Finnish tax bill

Next Love Limited was notified by the courts of the unpaid debt in November 2025

The operators of a Malta-based online dating website have been ordered to settle an unpaid €71,000 tax bill due in Finland.

Finnish authorities sought to enforce the debt against Next Love Limited via the Maltese courts following an EU cross-border tax recovery request.

The dating website advertises itself as a hub for divorced or separated singles from all over the globe. According to its website, it has more than 2 million members worldwide.

Under EU rules, Maltese authorities must help collect tax due in other EU countries.

Company did not contest claims

Such claims are treated like local civil debts, with the Malta tax commissioner acting on behalf of the foreign authority.

Finland identified San Ġwann-based Next Love Limited as the company liable for the tax debt and sought recovery through Malta.

Next Love Limited was notified by the courts of the unpaid debt in November 2025 but filed no reply and did not appear to contest the application.

A court, presided over by judge Doreen Clarke, highlighted that the court’s role at this stage is limited to assessing whether the conditions necessary for the Finnish authorities to enforce the tax claim in Malta were met.

€71,000 plus interest ordered

In line with past case law, the actual merits of the tax claim cannot be examined by the Maltese courts at this stage, and any challenge to the tax dues must be brought before the Finnish courts by Next Love Limited.

Finding the request by the Finnish authorities contained all the necessary information, including the nature and amount of tax due and the identification of the debtor, the court ordered that the debt be enforceable by the Maltese tax authorities.

The company was ordered to pay €71,290.36, together with interest due from the date of notification until effective payment.
