Robert Lake, Maltapost's new chief executive officer, last Friday met both General Workers Union and Union Haddiema Maghqudin (UHM) officials separately, and discussed Maltapost plc's recently approved plan and future challenges and opportunities.

Mr Lake emphasises the need for the company to grow and enhance its present services. He added: "To sustain growth, the company has identified new areas of activity and alternative sources of income.

"These new areas will require careful planning, sound investment and the commitment and support of its employees to be successful. It is also important that we focus on efficiency."

The parties agreed that traditional postal services are under threat from alternative means of communication, such as e-mail, SMS and local and international competition.

Consequently, Mr Lake explained that an important objective of the Business Plan is to build a level of profit that could be sustained as the company moves forward. This would enable the company to invest for the future.

The GWU delegation was headed by Josephine Attard Sultana, section secretary of the Public Services Employees Section, and Gejtu Vella, UHM General Secretary, headed the UHM delegation.
