Several Good Friday processions were held in a number of towns and villages across Malta and Gozo this evening to commemorate the death of Christ before he is risen again on Easter, next Sunday. Most ended up in darkness due to a power cut across the Maltese islands.

Hundreds of people in Biblical costumes walked in front and behind the statues watched by crowds of spectators to the sound of prayer and funeral marches.

Others masked themselves in white and walked or crawled on their knees in sacrifice, some of them chained.

A sombre mood was created with the street decorations but although a good chunk of the population fast on Good Friday, many lent and Easter sweets were sold, including the figolli, qaghaq tal-appostli and karamelli tal-harrub.
