Maltese cooperative exports 116 tonnes of waste batteries for recycling
That is equivalent to some six million batteries
GreenPak has exported 116 tonnes (116,000 kg) of waste batteries for recycling— equivalent to approximately 6 million batteries.
"This achievement marks a significant national milestone in environmental protection and resource recovery. The milestone reflects the continued strengthening of GreenPak’s nationwide battery collection system, ensuring that recycling remains simple, safe, and accessible for everyone," the cooperative said.
It said strong participation in battery collection was recorded across schools, supermarkets, local councils, stationers, retail outlets, and businesses, highlighting a growing commitment to responsible waste disposal across Malta and Gozo.
Despite their small size, portable batteries contain hazardous substances, making proper collection and recycling essential for protecting the environment and supporting sustainable resource use.
The recycling of 116 tonnes of batteries has generated environmental benefits equivalent to avoiding approximately 18.1 tonnes of CO₂ emissions and planting over 295 trees.
The battery collection also forms part of GreenPak’s ongoing “Batteries for Hospice” campaign, which links environmental responsibility with social impact. Through this initiative, used battery collection contributes to supporting Hospice Malta. To date, €22,000 has been donated to Hospice Malta through this campaign.
