A Maltese couple in their 30s are set to face court proceedings in Tunisia after they were yesterday indicted for allegedly being in possession of counterfeit US dollars.
Sources said the couple went on holiday last February and were reported to the police by a shop owner after they allegedly paid for goods with counterfeit money.
The sources said the couple were traced and arrested. A search of their hotel room allegedly yielded 40,000 counterfeit dollars.
The sources said the man and woman, who were pleading not guilty, were being kept in separate prisons and relatives were sending them money since prisoners have to pay for food in Arab prisons.
The woman's legal representative, Anglu Farrugia, was yesterday in Tunisia to assist his client. The man's legal counsel, Dr Chris Soler, was in Tunisia earlier on.
