Maltese economic scientist joins Nobel laureates at annual Lindau meeting

'An unparalleled academic opportunity' - Gilmour Camilleri

Maltese economic scientist Gilmour Camilleri represented the University of Malta at the eighth Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting dedicated to economic sciences.

The meeting brought together around 20 Nobel laureates to exchange ideas with the next generation of leading young economists from around the world.

Camilleri described the experience as “an unparalleled academic opportunity”, noting that the meeting offered direct and informal access to some of the world’s most influential economic thinkers.

“The discussions were both intellectually stimulating and inspiring, providing valuable insights into contemporary economic challenges and the evolving role of policy and research in addressing them,” he said.

The Lindau Meetings offer participants a week-long programme of lectures, panel discussions, and small-group sessions designed to promote open scientific exchange. This year’s focus was on key global economic themes, including inequality, climate economics, financial stability, and the future of sustainable growth.

A particular highlight for Camilleri was an extended lunch discussion with Nobel laureate Paul Romer, awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for integrating technological innovation into long-run macroeconomic analysis.

“What struck me most was the openness of the laureates, not only in speaking about their ground-breaking work, but also in reflecting on the practical and ethical dimensions of policymaking. The informal moments between sessions created a rare atmosphere of genuine curiosity and collaboration.”

Camilleri emphasised that the meeting also offered him the chance to share his own research and connect with peers from leading institutions worldwide.

“I was proud to represent the University of Malta on this global stage. Experiences like this underscore the incredible opportunities available to students pursuing advanced studies in economics at our university,” he said.
