These are the Maltese entries for a top EU contemporary architecture prize

Maltese architect selected to sit on the judging panel

The airport’s new VIP terminal is among six Maltese nominations for a prestigious EU prize for contemporary architecture.

Malta’s nominations, which also include projects in San Ġwann, Valletta, Rabat, Mdina and Cospicua (Bormla), are among 410 to be submitted for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture / Mies van der Rohe (EUmies) Awards.

Five of Malta’s entries were chosen by the Chamber of Architects (KTP), with the sixth nominated by “independent experts”, the chamber said. Its recommendations were selected from the winners of the Premju Emanuele Luigi Galizia 2024.

Maltese architect Chris Briffa has been selected as one of seven judges on the panel.

The awards recognise “excellence, innovation and sustainability in architecture, and highlight the transformative power of design in shaping Europe’s environment and society”, the KTP said in a statement announcing the nominations Friday.

Malta’s six nominations are:

  • BOTHOUSE (San Ġwann), by SON Architecture (Design Excellence Award winner, Premju Galizia 2024)
  • Casa Ursula (Valletta), by Open Work Studio (Interior Architecture Award winner, Premju Galizia 2024)

This year’s edition of the awards, now in their 19th year, brings together nominations from 40 countries and 143 regions, “reflecting the diversity, creativity and richness of Europe’s architectural landscape”, the KTP said.

A shortlist of 40 projects will be announced in January, and narrowed down to seven finalists in February.

Jury members will visit the projects in person next Spring, with the winners announced in the Finnish city of Oulu next April.
