Malta's chances in the men's tennis singles were completely dashed yesterday at the Marsa Sports Club when our two representatives - Mark Schembri and Marcus Delicata - were eliminated in the opening round.

Delicata, making his first showing in the GSSE, was perhaps overwhelmed by the occasion and lost in two sets to Liechtenstein's Herbert Weirather 6-4 6-2.

It was then Schembri's turn to play on Court One but despite all his endeavour, Malta's no.1 player failed to make it past Monaco's Emmanuel Heussner who won the match 6-4 6-4.

Tennis resumes today at the Marsa Sports Club with the quarter-finals from the men's and women's singles starting at 1.30 p.m.

Rosanne Dimech plays against Luxembourg's M. Minella while Lisa Camenzuli faces M. Agarici, of San Marino. Both matches are in Court One.

The opening rounds from the men's and women's doubles will also be played today. Schembri partners veteran Gordon Asciak in their match against Andorra pair Jimenez-Guerra/Vila.

Carol Cassar Torreggiani is Camenzuli's partner in the women's doubles. They will not be in action today after receiving a first-round bye.
