Three Maltese secondary schools submitted their respective projects on fundamental human rights to take part in this year's Mattia Preti e Croce di Malta competition.

The award of the golden Maltese Cross will be assigned in October during a conference in Cosenza, Calabria, Italy. Ambassador Richard Muscat, a member of the Mattia Preti e Croce di Malta organising group, is co-ordinator of the Maltese participants.

De La Salle College, Cottonera (who are participating for the second year running), Sir Adrian Dingli Girls' Junior Lyceum, Pembroke and Liceo Vassalli, Tal-Handaq joined other Italian schools in this year's competition organised by the Società Ven. Maria Cristina di Savoia of Rende, Calabria.

The objective of the competition, aimed at young students, is to promote and to create awareness of the Charter of Human Rights on the celebration of its 50th anniversary by UNESCO.

The participating schools have adopted one human right from those indicated by the organisers, and built a project on the chosen theme. The submitted projects consist of different formats such as CD roms, audio/video presentations, photographic exhibitions, graphic presentations, interviews and drama performances.

De La Salle College adopted the Right to Life, Sir Adrian Dingli Lyceum adopted the Right to Health, and Liceo Vassalli worked on the Right to Freedom of Expression.

The preparation of each project spread over four months and involved teachers and students of each school who dedicated long hours of work outside the school curriculum.
