Parliamentary Secretary Justyne Caruana told Parliament yesterday that Maltese sign language would be considered Malta’s official sign language and the government would be responsible for promoting it through its services.

Speaking on the Bill for the Sign Language Council of Malta’s establishment, Dr Caruana said it went with the UN Convention for the rights of people with disabilities, assuring deaf persons could contribute to society.

Justice Minister Owen Bonnici introduced the Bill amending various succession laws, allowing the implementation of EU provisions on jurisdiction, applicable law, recognition and enforcement.

MPs approved the third reading of the Gender Identity, Gender Expression and Sex Characteristics Bill, the Civil Code (Amendment) Bill, the Budgetary Measures Implementation and the Banking (Amendment) Bill.
