Maltese sport and exercise science UK graduate aims high

Obtains bachelor’s degree from Nottingham University, furthering studies at Loughborough University

At the age of just 16, James Vella Vidal left Malta to continue his education in the UK. Last year he returned after having obtained a bachelor’s degree in sport and exercise science at the University of Nottingham.

Reflecting on his educational journey, Vella Nidal said: “It was a huge step at a young age. Leaving home meant adapting to a new culture, a new education system and learning to be independent much earlier than most. But it gave me resilience, maturity and a drive to make the most of every opportunity.”

These qualities became the foundation for his academic success. Over three years at Nottingham, he gained a deep understanding of physiology, biomechanics, psychology  and public health.

As an active table tennis player representing Malta, he continued his sporting journey at Nottingham, serving as vice president of the university’s table tennis club. This role allowed him to compete, mentor new players and organise events that fostered a welcoming and inclusive sporting community.

“Table tennis has always been a part of my life, and combining it with my studies made me appreciate how sport can benefit individuals both physically and mentally.”

Looking ahead, he is embarking on postgraduate studies in clinical exercise physiology at Loughborough University, which is ranked the No. 1 in the world for sport-related subjects by the QS World University Rankings. He aims to use this advanced training to make a lasting impact in Malta’s health and sport sectors by contributing to exercise-based health programmes, promoting active lifestyles and supporting community sport development.

Vella Vidal completed his degree in Nottingham after receiving support from the Malta Sport Scholarship Scheme, financed by the Maltese government.

“The scholarship didn’t just fund my education, it gave me the opportunity to train in a world-class environment, to grow as a person, and to prepare for a career that blends science, health and service to others.”
