A group of 18 Maltese students accompanied by three leaders joined a group of 18 German students and their leaders on a week of sports activities in Germany. The Maltese students of the Maria Regina Junior Lyceum, Blata l-Bajda, and Maria Assumpta Secondary School, Hamrun, met the German students from various sports clubs in Bavaria between August 2 and 9.
This was the second Sports Youth Exchange to Germany organised by the Youth Service Organisation within the Department of Students Services and International Relations in collaboration with the PE Section of the Education Division in Malta and the Bayerische Sportjugend in Germany.
The highlights of the programme in Benediktbeuren consisted of mountain trekking, canoeing on the lake, nature walks through forests, and other sport activities such as swimming, wall climbing and rope skipping.
Other excursions were organised to Linderhof Castle and Munich. The visit to the Munich Olympic Stadium included a morning watching the European Athletics Championships.
All students were presented with two T-shirts, one by the German organising body and another by Teamsport of Malta, thanks to Mr David Attard.
Heartfelt thanks to all those people who made this memorable experience possible.
The Malta group looks forward to the return visit by the German Group in Easter 2003.
