Maltese studio gets Emmy nomination for visual effects in Black Mirror episode

Stargate Studios Malta's VFX supervisor Jonathan Caruana nominated for the prestigious Emmy Award

A Maltese visual effects company has been nominated for an Emmy Award for its work on an episode of the Netflix popular sci-fi series Black Mirror.

Stargate Studios Malta was nominated for the work on the episode ‘USS Callister - Into Infinity' from the latest season of Black Mirror.

“This is a big achievement for a small team from Malta, and it goes to show that it’s about the quality of the service,” a spokesperson said after the company announced the nomination for the Emmys -  a range of awards for artistic and technical merit for the television industry.

Stargate Studios offers VFX and post-production for films and television.

The spokesperson said that Stargate had worked on various episodes of seasons 6 and 7 of Black Mirror - a science fiction anthology series created by Charlie Brooker, known for its dark, satirical, and often unsettling explorations of technology and its impact on society.

The nomination for the Emmys came for the last episode of season 7, during which Stargate was involved with other visual effects vendors. The person nominated was Stargate’s VFX supervisor, Jonathan Caruana who brought the visuals to life.

In a post on Facebook Stargate said: "We're also incredibly grateful to the Black Mirror creative team - Charlie Brooker, Josie Henwood and James MacLachlan for trusting us with this project for yet another season! It's been an absolute privilege to work on it. We're honoured to be recognised for our hard work and dedication. Fingers crossed for the big night,” he said, referring to the award night in September.
