Information Technology Minister Austin Gatt insisted today that SmartCity jobs will be going to the Maltese first.
He said that when the SmartCity deal was negotiated, it was ensured that the contract provided for priority to Maltese citizens when the project started taking in new workers.
Yesterday Dr Sant said that a Labour government did not want Smart City to create jobs for foreigners.
Speaking during the launch of a new IT training deal, struck between IT giants Oracle and MCAST, Dr Gatt said that the biggest challenge facing Malta in the IT sector was not attracting new investment but training the right people to make sure that Malta wasready to provide thousands of IT workers in the coming years.
Dr Gatt said that while in 2003 there were only 712 students following IT post secondary courses, the number shot up to 2,080 this year.
He said that this was already a huge improvement but more needs to be done.
