All three Maltese players in the ITF U-18 world ranking tournament, sponsored by Gatorade, made it to the second round yesterday after winning their respective matches at the Marsa Sports Club.

Steffi Sullivan beat Swedish opponent Wieslander 6-4 6-1, Elaine Genovese ousted Ukrainian Pashket 6-0 6-3 and Matthew Asciak had the better of Marcus Krebs, of Sweden, 6-0 6-3.

In the girls ITF tournament, top seed Naomi Cavaday, of Britain, beat an Italian opponent 6-1 6-2. Cavaday is ranked 335 in the world.

All seeded players won their respective encounters except for Maxi Ehmer, ranked 635 in the world and fourth seed at Marsa. She lost to Czech Susanna Linhova in the first round.

With a draw of 48 players, the top seeds in the boys tournament had the day off. The top 16 were awarded a bye in the first round.

Today, Asciak faces a tough proposition in Israeli second seed Alexei Milner.

Sullivan faces an equally difficult task when facing Cavaday and Genovese was drawn to play Jessica Jackson, the fifth seed from Great Britain.
