Maltese woman dies in car crash in Germany
Doreen Böhnert had lived in Bonn for decades but often returned to Malta
A 64-year-old woman originally from Ħamrun has died in a car crash in Germany.
Doreen Böhnert passed away on December 29, 2025, in a fatal accident. Her Pomeranian dog, Kimba, who was travelling in the car with her, was also killed in the crash.
Böhnert had been living in Bonn, Germany, for decades, having moved there in her youth. However, she still visited Malta regularly for months-long stretches, staying at her residence in St Paul’s Bay.
“She was fun, full of energy and had a lovely character,” her cousin Claudette Vella said.
Vella explained that the tragic accident occurred just a month or so after Böhnert’s mother had died.
A tribute was also shared on social media by Fr George Micallef, who remembered her fondly.
“Rest in peace, and thank you for all the love you gave to us priests; you loved us like we were your own siblings or children. RIP…” he wrote.
Many people left messages of condolence in the comments section of his post. One read: “She will leave a great void in the hearts and lives of many… rest in peace, dear Doreen.”
Another commented: “I am shocked by this tragic news. Rest in peace, dear Doreen. May the Lord grant strength to the family.”
