A selection from the Malta Amateur Wrestling Federation recently took part in the Torneo Internazionale delle Nazioni (International Tournament for Nations) held in Termini Imeresi, Sicily.
National coach Jesmond Giordimaina accompanied the Maltese selection which was made up of Abraham Vassallo, George Vassallo and Jason Zammit.
The Maltese wrestlers made an impact on the tournament with A. Vassallo taking a silver medal and Zammit winning bronze.
In the 84kg, Abraham Vassallo beat Lillo Albanese by a fall and Salvo Presburgo by superiority. The two Italians failed to score a point against the Maltese wrestler.
Vassallo's march was halted by Bulgarian opponent Geshev Mirosal who took the gold medal. Zammit secured bronze when, in the decisive bout for third place, he had the better of Paolo Ciani on points.
Although Malta only fielded a three-man team, they placed fourth in the overall classification.
Next week, another Maltese selection will be revisiting Sicily to take part in the Grand Prix Sicilia in Palermo. The Maltese team will consist of A. Vassallo, Zammit and Nikolai Portelli who will be making his debut for the national team.
