Man accused of grabbing partner by the neck denied bail

The woman told police the argument escalated into violence and damage to the property

A 26-year-old man was arraigned in court on Tuesday after neighbours reported seeing him allegedly grab his partner by the neck.

Josef Grech appeared before Magistrate Ingrid Bianco and was charged with domestic violence offences and allegedly breaching bail conditions.

Police Inspector Carlos Cordina told the court that a police report was made by a British national regarding a disturbance at a residence in Marsascala. He said when police arrived at the scene, it emerged that the accused had allegedly grabbed his partner by the neck, which prompted neighbours to call for assistance.

At the scene, the police found the accused shirtless and with blood on his face. The woman first told police she did not want to file a report and denied having been assaulted.

She was later taken to the Domestic Violence Unit, where she alleged that they had an argument, which escalated into physical violence and even damage to the property.

During his arrest, the accused complained of being in pain and was taken to the Floriana health clinic. After he was discharged, his statement was taken before he was arraigned in court.

Magistrate Ingrid Bianco rejected a request for bail.

The prosecution was led by Inspectors Carlos Cordina and Chantelle Mifsud.
