Man admits to bringing stolen Range Rover to Malta from Sicily
Police said the case formed part of a series of similar cases
A 31-year-old man was handed a two-year prison sentence, suspended for four years, after admitting to possessing a stolen Range Rover worth around €80,000 when he arrived in Malta from Sicily.
Police Inspector Shawn Pawney told the court that the case formed part of a series of similar cases involving the same modus operandi.
Vehicles were allegedly stolen in the UK through a scheme in which individuals acquired cars by agreeing to pay by instalments, before stopping the payments and selling the vehicles.
In this case, the stolen Range Rover was brought to Malta, and police believed it was intended for sale locally.
Inspector Pawney testified before Magistrate Jean Paul Grech during the arraignment on Sunday of Libyan national Ali Ragab Ali Alhamrouni, 31.
Alhamrouni admitted to bringing the stolen vehicle aboard a Virtu Ferries catamaran last month.
He filed a guilty plea and was given a suspended jail term.
Lawyers Martina Herrera and Jose Herrera represented the accused.
