Man who admitted stealing over €2,300 handed suspended sentence

Josef Farrugia was handed a two-year prison sentence suspended for three years and placed under a treatment order

A man has been handed a suspended prison sentence after admitting to stealing more than €2,000 from a parked car almost seven years ago.

Josef Farrugia, 46, of Santa Luċija, was found guilty on Thursday of stealing €2,329.37 from a Toyota HiAce parked in Santa Venera on April 15, 2019.

During court proceedings, Farrugia admitted several times to stealing the money from the vehicle.

The court found him guilty but noted that both parties agreed it would not be appropriate for him to be given an effective custodial sentence.

Farrugia was placed under a three-year treatment order to receive psychiatric and psychological assistance.

The treatment order also requires him to follow therapy recommended by his probation officer, with the help of other professionals.

The court further sentenced Farrugia to two years’ imprisonment, suspended for three years. He was also ordered to pay €2,119.27

Magistrate Astrid May Grima presided over the case.
