Man agrees to be extradited to Germany for tax investigation

57-year-old was only told on Friday that he is wanted in Germany, defence says

A 57-year-old Briton on Monday agreed to be extradited to Germany, where he is facing legal proceedings over alleged undeclared income.

Sarbjit Singh Basi, a 57-year-old analyst resident in Malta, is wanted over undeclared income dating back to a period when he worked in Germany. He worked for a Swiss-based company and paid taxes in Switzerland.

Lawyer Joe Giglio, assisting Singh Basi, told the court that his client has been living in Malta for quite some time. On Friday he was informed that he was wanted in Germany.

“We need to provide documents and information to the German authorities in connection with this tax issue. We’ve retrieved some information over the weekend but need to look for the rest,” he said.

He therefore asked the court to make a recommendation to the prison authorities for the man to be allowed to access his laptop as they prepared the documents.

The request was accepted.

Magistrate Gabriella Vella presided.

AG lawyers Stephanie Haris and Lynn Schembri prosecuted assisted by police inspector Roderick Spiteri.

Lawyer Joe Giglio and Michaela Giglio assisted the accused.
