Man, 51, arrested at Malta airport with suspected khat

The 100 packages of the alleged stimulant are estimated to be worth €8,000

A man was arrested at Malta International Airport on suspicion of importing 19 kilogrammes of khat, an African plant that acts as a stimulant when consumed.

In a statement, police said the 51-year-old UK national was stopped by Customs officials upon his arrival from Manchester.

A search of his luggage yielded 100 packages of the suspected drug, with a street value of around €8,000.

Magistrate Dr Monica Vella LL.D was informed of the case and an inquiry has been opened.

The man is expected to appear before Magistrate Kevan Azzopardi this morning.
