Man awaiting murder trial jailed for hold-up

A 29-year-old man who committed a hold-up while awaiting trial for murder has been jailed for four years.

Frank Amo Kwaku, from Ghana, who is awaiting trial by jury over a 2021 fatal stabbing, was arraigned last week and admitted to the hold-up last month of a Sta Venera shop.  

He admitted to aggravated theft charges, holding an employee against her will, causing her slight injuries, carrying a knife without a licence and breaching two sets of bail conditions, the most recent of which was imposed in April.

The court jailed him for four years and condemned him to pay a fine of €116.47. The court also ordered the forfeiture of €23,500 in personal guarantee and a €12,500 deposit made as part of his bail conditions.

Magistrate Astrid May Grima presided. AG lawyer Miryea Mifsud prosecuted assisted by police inspectors Lydon Zammit, Keith Rizzo and Ian Vella. Legal aid lawyer Martina Herrera appeared for the accused.
