Charged with slashing man's neck at Paceville nightclub
Accused David Jonathan Spiteri was heavily intoxicated, court hears
A man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly slashing another man's neck in a Paceville nightclub.
David Jonathan Spiteri, 37, from Pembroke denied the charges when he appeared in court on Monday.
The construction worker allegedly attacked another man with a knife without warning at around 1am on Sunday at a club on St George's Road.
The prosecution said the victim, a Syrian national, was on the dancefloor when Spiteri, who was allegedly heavily intoxicated, approached and tripped on a step.
Spiteri initially remained on the floor, before standing up and swiping at the neck of the victim without warning.
The victim then left the club and approached police, who administered first aid before an ambulance arrived. In the meantime, other officers entered the club in search of the aggressor, who had moved to another part of the club and blended in with the crowd.
Police then found Spiteri, and with the help of bouncers, managed to subdue him. He was taken to Mater Dei Hospital due to his intoxication.
He was also charged with resisting arrest and disobeying police orders.
The defence requested bail, to which the prosecution objected since the investigation was still in its infancy - the victim has yet to testify while CCTV footage is still being studied.
The defence also requested a ban on the publication on the victim’s name.
Magistrate Yana Micallef Stafrace rejected both requests.
Kaylie Bonett and Etienne Savona appeared for the prosecution assisted by Inspector Dylan Pace, while Michael Sciriha and Roberto Spiteri appeared for the accused.
