A 10-month old baby girl is currently fighting for her life after she was allegedly thrown into her cot by her mother’s 27-year-old partner.
The man, from Zabbar, was this afternoon charged with the girl’s attempted murdered at the couple’s residence in Hamrun. The mother was charged with negligence. Both pleaded not guilty.
The incident happened at 5am on Friday.
The baby is being operated upon today. She is in a critical condition having suffered head and leg injuries. The court appointed expert Mario Scerri to examine the girl.
The man was also charged with negligence of his partner’s other two children, both aged under 12, lying under oath, and with being in possession of cocaine, cannabis grass and resin. He was remanded in custody.
Sources said he tried to blame the mother for the incident.
The girl’s mother, a 24-year-old who was born in Romania was also charged with possession of cocaine and cannabis.
She was granted bail against a personal guarantee of €10,000. The court ordered the mother not to contact the witnesses, who include the father of her children and the children.
A probation officer was appointed by the court to follow the accused and periodically test her for any illegal substance.
