A man who lives in a garage in Marsaxlokk was today remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to defrauding a woman when he allegedly cashed stolen cheques.
Giuseppe Cassar, 55, who is declared he lived on social benefits, denied using a stolen chequebook, forging signatures and cashing the stolen cheques between January 1 and 21 this year.
Before Magistrate Miriam Hayman, he was also charged with committing a crime during a probation order and breaching the conditions of bail granted by the same magistrate in July last year over a different case.
He had been granted bail against a deposit of €2,500 and a €10,000 personal guarantee.
Mr Cassar pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him and was remanded in custody after he did not even file a request for bail.
Police Inspectors Rennie Stivala and Robert said Sarreo prosecuted while lawyers Michael and Lucio Sciriha defended the man.
