A 38-year-old man from Ghana was this morning charged with importing two kilogrammes of cannabis grass.

Joseph Papa Smith landed in Malta last night after flying in from Catania. He was arrested after a routine search yielded two kilogrammes of suspected cannabis grass in his luggage.

Prosecuting officer Malcolm Bondin told Magistrate Audrey Demicoli that the accused possessed a Ghanaian passport and an Italian identity card.

He was charged with importing the drug and with aggravated possession.

He pleaded not guilty and was remanded in custody.

Legal aid lawyer Benjamin Valencia appeared for the accused.
