Manchester City, who forked out an unofficial sum of £127 million in the two transfer windows of August and January, finished top of the spending chart for season 2008-09 in the English Premiership.

Last season, Tottenham were the biggest spenders in English football with a total outlay of £65.6 million. The Spurs, who embarked on a flurry of transfer deals after replacing Spanish coach Juande Ramos with Harry Redknapp in the opening months of the season, earned £76m from outgoing transfers.

This season, Tottenham have poured £112.1m into the transfer market, just under £15 million less than the amount spent by the Abu-Dhabi bankrolled Manchester City who are now widely considered as the richest club in the world.

Not so long ago, these astronomical figures in the transfer market were only associated with Chelsea but the Blues only spent a 'modest' £25.2 million this term.

Most of the clubs have gone beyond their usual quota, however.

If you look at newcomers Hull City, they broke the club transfer record after spending £9.3 million overall even though the Tigers are last in the spenders' chart.

Seven clubs in the top ten from the previous spenders' list remained in the top half of the classification. These are Tottenham, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Sunderland and Portsmouth.
