Man denies stalking former partner

The 37-year-old British barber denied harassing his ex-girlfriend after their relationship ended in September

A 37-year-old British barber has denied harassing his former girlfriend, after allegedly attempting to keep contacting her after their relationship ended.

The woman filed a police report on February 7, alleging the man had stalked and harassed her, police inspector Omar Zammit told a court Tuesday.

The pair had been in a relationship which came to an end in September, but the man was still emotionally attached to her, the court heard.

He is alleged to have sent her several messages, emails from different accounts, and visited her at her workplace.

The police sent for the accused on February 12, telling him to stop contacting the woman.

On Saturday, the woman informed police that the man had continued to message her despite the police warning the preceding month.

Two days later, the man was arrested.

He was accused of harassing and stalking his former partner, insulting or threatening her, and making threats using electronic equipment.

After denying the charges, defence lawyer Alex Scerri Herrera requested bail, to which the prosecution did not object, provided a protection order was issued in favour of the alleged victim.

The court granted the man bail against a €1,000 deposit and a €4,000 personal guarantee. He was ordered to sign the bail book twice a week.

A protection order was issued in favour of the woman.

Magistrate Nadia Helena Vella presided.

Police inspector Omar Zammit prosecuted.

Lawyers Alex Scerri Herrera and Jeanine Depasquale appeared for the accused.
