Updated 3.10pm with Marsa incident updates
A 40-year-old man from Mellieħa died this morning after he was run over by a car in Triq il-Marfa, Mellieħa.
Andre Debattista, a father of two girls, was walking with his 10-year-old daughter when he was hit by the vehicle. The girl sustained no injuries though she was suffering from shock. The police believe he was crossing the road.
A doctor who was cycling in the area gave the man first aid until a medical team from Mater Dei Hospital arrived on site.
The police said a car driven by a 22-year-old man from Fgura braked suddenly as a result of the incident, causing the vehicle behind him, driven by a 39-year-old, to crash into him.
The accident happened at around 6.30am close to Għadira Bay.
An inquiry is being held.
In another incident this afternoon, a 34-year-old traffic policeman was slightly injured in Marsa after he was hit by a car at the traffic lights. The car was driven by a 26-year-old woman from Żebbuġ also heading in the direction of Valletta.
As a result of the impact, both the policeman and his motorbike were hurled several metres up the road.
He was rushed to hospital following the incident on the busy December 13 road.
One of the road lanes has been closed to traffic.
