A 60-year-old man who lives in St Paul’s Bay died early Friday morning following an argument at an establishment in his home town in what police are currently considering as a murder.

The argument took place in Triq it-Turisti at 1.30am and the victim died shortly after at Mater Dei Hospital, a police statement said.

Officers said a man is assisting them in their investigations.

Sources said this man, also Maltese, had been arguing with the deceased inside Munchies bar. The victim was then asked to leave.

Police have spoken to the bar owner and are searching for CCTV cameras that may have caught the incident.

An inquiry is being held.

Bar has seen violence in the past

The incident happened at Munchies Bar, which has been the scene of violence in the past.

In 2018 a 24-year-old Serbian man was imprisoned for five years after he was found guilty of smashing a beer glass in the barman’s face.

Barman, Ryan Magro, a 29-year-old father from Mellieħa, ended up battling to save his eyesight and was blinded in one eye.

He had been trying to escort the allegedly drunk aggressor out of the bar at the time of the incident.
