Briton Mark Charles Stephens arrived in Malta last night and is expected to be charged with conspiring to deal in drugs.
Mr Stephens arrived on a flight from Madrid, escorted by two police officers, after being extradited from Spain following lengthy legal battles both in Spain and in Malta.
The case started when the Magistrates' Court issued an arrest warrant against him. This order was issued on the basis of information obtained during the compilation proceedings of Gregory Robert Eyre and his girlfriend Susan Jayne Molyneaux, who were charged with crimes connected with drug trafficking.
Mr Eyre had been jailed for 15 years and fined Lm25,000 when he admitted to drug importation and conspiracy in relation to drug trafficking.
Ms Molyneaux pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.
Deputy Attorney General Peter Grech, Senior Council to the Republic Donatella Frendo Dimech and Police Superintendent Neil Harrison will prosecute.
Lawyer Joseph Brincat is representing Mr Stephens.
