A prison inmate yesterday appeared in the Magistrates' Court to be charged with murder, the third time in his life.

Silvio Mangion's arraignment in the afternoon was delayed by over an hour because the court, presided over by Magistrate Jacqueline Padovani Grima, could not trace a legal aide to assist the accused.

Eventually, lawyer Leo Bencini was appointed to represent him.

Mr Mangion was charged with the murder of Maria Stella Magrin at her home in Cospicua 19 years ago. He pleaded not guilty to stabbing her repeatedly on October 29, 1986.

He also pleaded not guilty to the possession of a weapon at the time of the commission of the crime, and holding Ms Magrin against her will and theft.

Barely two weeks ago, Mr Mangion was charged with the murder of Rozina Zammit in her Safi home 21 years ago. She had also been stabbed to death.

Mr Mangion is currently serving a 21-year jail term for the murder of Frenc Cassar, 74, of Zejtun, and the attempted murder of Guza Cassar on August 18, 1988.

Police Superintendent Pierre Calleja and Inspector Chris Pullicino prosecuted.
