Man gets bail after being caught with cannabis and cash in rental car
Accused is alleged to have breached bail terms given in a separate case
A 26-year-old caught with cannabis in a rental car while in alleged breach of orders given by a separate court has been granted bail.
The accused, Polish national Adam Nikolaj Jenczak, stood accused of aggravated cannabis possession, money laundering as well as breaching bail conditions and breaching the conditions of a previous freezing order.
Jenczak, who has lived in Malta for a number of years, was arrested following an incident in Msida.
Prosecuting inspector Joseph Mallia explained that two police officers were patrolling the area when they spotted a rental car parked on the side of the road.
The driver acted suspiciously when officers approached, and they spotted a packet of suspected cannabis on the passenger seat. The accused was informed that he was under arrest and taken in for questioning. .
A bag with suspected cannabis and €2,000 in cash were found in the vehicle.
Prosecutors objected to the accused’s bail request when he was arraigned before Magistrate Kevan Azzopardi. They said they feared he would not abide by bail conditions, given he was being charged with breaching bail and freezing order.
The accused’s defence lawyers countered that the charge of aggravated possession was inflated, since the cannabis was not for trafficking but for personal use. The accused had a fixed address in St Paul’s Bay and had been living in Malta for a number of years, they said.
Bail was granted against a €5,000 deposit and a €10,000 personal guarantee. A curfew was also imposed.
Lawyer Valentina Cassar and Inspector Joseph Mallia prosecuted. Lawyers Franco Debono, Adreana Zammit and Eman Scicluna assisted the accused.
