A 20-year-old Somali Abdiqani Mahad Mohamed was given a 16-month jail term suspended for 18 months for breaking into a parked Skoda in Marsa and stealing a packed lunch yesterday at 8.15pm.

Police are investigating another man who was with the accused at the time.

In a separate arraignment, a Libyan man was jailed for seven months after he admitted to stealing €125 from a Birzebbuga bakery and relapsing.

Abdul Hamid Saeid, 34, stood in the dock with a black eye and admitted to stealing the cash from Charles Micallef and assaulting him in the early hours of this morning.

Mr Saeid was caught red-handed by the owner of the bakery as he tried to leave the bakery with the cash. He admitted to stealing from the bakery and relapsing.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke presided over the arraignments.

Police Inspectors Johann Fenech and Robert Vella prosecuted while Noel Bartolo was legal aid lawyer for both accused.
