Court noted accused has an 'alarming' criminal record for a 22-year-old
A 22-year-old man, who sped off from a police roadblock, was given a year’s prison sentence after pleading guilty.
Ransdon Debono admitted to charges of reckless, negligent, and dangerous driving without a licence or valid insurance cover when he was arraigned on December 29.
Back in December police inspector Clive Abela told the court that they were carrying out a road check in Triq Kordin in Paola when they noticed a vehicle which did not stop when they signalled the driver.
The police chased the car but had to call off the chase due to the danger to other motorists. The car was found some time later abandoned on a double yellow line and was subsequently towed away.
Investigations led the car to Debono.
On Thursday magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo handed her sentence.
In her judgement the magistrate said that for a 22-year-old, Debono has an “alarming” criminal record.
“He has already committed various offences, including offences related to traffic violations such as those with which he is charged today. It also appears from the Criminal Record that he was given several opportunities by this Court to reform himself, opportunities which the accused chose to ignore and cast aside”.
The magistrate said that this case was the fourth time Debono has faced the court for similar offences.
Debono was therefore given a one-year effective prison sentence, fined €5,823, and disqualified from having a license for a year and a half.
